Electricity that does not flow cleanly turns into heat. That single fact is what makes infrared scanning useful: a fault you cannot see, hear or smell is often already visible in the thermal spectrum, weeks or months before it fails.
Why it has to be done under load
A dead circuit is thermally silent. A survey is only meaningful when the installation is working normally, ideally near typical peak demand, which is precisely why it suits operating buildings — no shutdown, no dismantling, no downtime.
What shows up on electrical distribution
- Loose or corroded terminations — the single most common finding, and the one most likely to start a fire.
- Phase imbalance, where one phase carries far more current than the others and runs hot for it.
- Overloaded circuits and undersized conductors operating beyond their rating.
- Failing protective devices and contactors heating internally.
- Poor connections in busbars, isolators and neutral bars.
Severity matters more than the picture
A thermal image on its own is a colourful photograph. What makes it actionable is a temperature differential, a comparison against the equivalent phase or component, and a severity rating that tells you whether to act tonight or at the next planned shutdown.
What shows up on wet services and structure
The same principle finds problems that have nothing to do with electricity:
- Concealed hot and cold water leaks behind finishes, visible as a temperature plume.
- Blocked or air-locked sections in heating and hot water circuits.
- Moisture ingress in roofs, slabs and walls, which retains heat differently to dry material.
- Missing or failed thermal insulation, and the resulting heat loss or gain that drives HVAC consumption.
- Air leakage around openings and ducting.
What a good report looks like
Ask for these five things. A report without them is a slideshow:
- 01A thermal image paired with a normal photograph of the same component, so anyone can identify the location.
- 02The measured temperature and the differential against a reference — the same component on another phase, or ambient.
- 03The load at the time of the scan. A reading at 20% load means something very different to the same reading at 90%.
- 04A severity rating with a defined action window: immediate, planned, monitor.
- 05A specific recommendation. Not 'investigate further' but 'retorque and retest', 'rebalance phases', 'replace device'.
Where the money is
The economic case is not the survey. It is the outage that does not happen — the production stoppage, the spoiled stock, the emergency callout at overtime rates, the insurance claim complicated by an absence of maintenance records.
For any facility where an unplanned outage is measured in production rather than inconvenience, a scan on an annual cycle is among the cheapest risk instruments available.
